As part of the ‘consider’ workshop, we were asked to bring in objects from home to create our own still life setups.
I tried to include angular, liner and curvy shapes in my setup to help produce interesting abstract drawings/paintings.
For the first part of the workshop we had to create charcoal/conte studies and wet studies.
Using conte allowed me to be very sketchy and rough when drawing the setup, and this allowed me to create a sort of abstract effect. I like conte because it’s quick and not as messy as charcoal. However I also loved the effect the charcoal produced.
For my wet study I used black Indian ink. I find this is a very hard medium to work in because it’s quite difficult to get a good range of tones with the ink. I also found that my page became easily saturated and distributed the page. To me, it was tricky to blend the ink from dark to light, so overall I didn’t enjoy using the ink but I tired my best to create a good study.
For the second part of the workshop, we were tasked to create two paintings using acrylic paint. I was eager to start these because I love using acrylics and was excited to introduce colour into my work. I used thick card material to paint on so it wouldn’t become distorted.
During the painting part of the workshop I learned how to paint properly and how to correctly begin a painting. I had become so used to the techniques of A Level Art that I wasn’t aware of how to properly paint. Gerry told us important points about how to go about starting a painting:
- Cover the page with a base colour- this was to make sure all the white was covered and to make it easier to paint on
- Draw onto the base colour with a darker colour- this was to allow us to mark out the objects and this incorporated the technique of drawing into painting
- Block in colour- blocking in the outlines with colour allowed me to quickly create a rough painting of my setup and made it easier to go back and refine my painting
For my first painting Iused primary colours to create contrast between different parts of the painting and because I didn’t like the original colours of my objects. I think it makes it look more exciting and interesting. I like how the fabric in the background of my setups resulted in abstract shapes in my painting, the curves and loops create a nice contrast between the linear and angular shapes. Since I had included a water bottle in my setup it was a challenge to recreate the transparency of the material. I used very watered down paint to block in the shape of the bottle so that the background could still be seen. Then I used a light colour to add light marks and shine. Overall I’m pleased with how this painting turned out because it’s quite abstract and has striking colours.
For my second painting I used complimentary colours to create a bold contrast. For this painting I did a very close up section of my setup so overall it looks more abstract than the first. I was truly working under pressure for this because I had a time limit to finish it. It taught me that I had to just block in the colours and not be too fussy about any details. I surprised myself because I got the painting almost completely finished minus a few details. However I still like the result it produced because it makes the painting more complex and interesting.
I really enjoyed the still life setup part of the ‘consider’ Workshop because it allowed me to have a lot of freedom with the objects I drew/painted and the colours and materials I could use.
